It's Okay Not to Be Okay

We hide behind this word, "okay," as if it means that everything is perfect.

We need to learn that, sometimes, it is okay for us to not be okay. It's okay for you to cry in the shower, not leave your room all day, and not even have the energy to make yourself a sandwich. You are allowed to have a bad day without feeling like you have lost all the progress you have made.

This isn't an easy road to travel, and you don't have to feel perfectly back to normal once you start treatment. At moments you aren't going to be "okay", but that is what makes us all human. The real thing to remember is that through all the not-okay parts, you still remember to cope in healthy ways.

As long as you are not falling back and negative coping skills and patterns, you can define yourself as "okay" if that is the label you want to wear. We can't be dragged down by this universal idea that to be normal you have to be happy. If being fine, okay, or normal is defined as being perfectly happy and in control of your life at all times, I don't want to be normal. Let me have my emotions and sometimes not be okay, because it is okay to not be okay.

Say this aloud with me. It is okay to not be okay. It is okay to not be okay. We cannot force ourselves to feel something we don't feel. It is okay to not be okay.

Lots of love,
- Liv
