Quick Remedies For a Heavy Soul

By Marie Allred - September 10, 2018

Sometimes it’s hard to find your way out of the hole you’re in, but that’s why today I’ve put together a list of the things that I do to remedy a heavy soul. So, if you or anyone you know needs a pick-me-up today try a few of the things on this list and you might just find something that helps!

Never underestimate the power of positive music. I had a teacher in high school my junior and senior year who I confided in a lot after I felt I knew him well enough. Often when he saw me looking down he’d tell me not to worry about whatever was giving me grief and then start playing happy and upbeat 80’s music over his classrooms projector speaker. Over my time there the music truly changed my perspective on every situation. After all, it's kind of hard to cry when Sweet Caroline and Mr. Blue Sky are blasting all around you.

Of course, sometimes you just have to cry it out
. There's no shame in letting the waterworks out every now and again. It's healthy to give your body a chance to release all that pent-up emotion and stress and sometimes tears are the way to go. Of course, if you're crying every day and night for what seems like no reason then something more is probably going on and you shouldn't ignore your mind and body's way of telling you that something is wrong.

Lay down and look at the sky. I know it might sound stupid, but whether it’s looking at the sunrise, sunset, endless blue, storm clouds or twinkling stars the sky is always easy to marvel at and lose yourself in. Sometimes we all need a reminder of the infinite and beautiful nature of the world in which we live and I know it makes me sound like a hippie but the sky always offers some level of comfort in dark times.

Eat some sugar. Does this seem counterintuitive? Yes, yes it does. But I for one can say that just a little bit of chocolate or something sweet is always a good pick-me-up as long as it’s in moderation. You can probably guess why eating a gallon of ice cream in an attempt to make you feel better is just going to give you a stomach ache and a lot of regrets.

Watch a comedy show on Netflix. It never hurts to have a good laugh, and it’s been scientifically proven that laughter improves your mood. A few of my favorites are The Good Place, Kim’s Convenience, Parks and Recreation, New Girl and Portlandia.
